This is a love story with plenty of 17th-century panache and comedy
Cyrano de Bergerac, a nobleman soldier in the French Army, is a brash, strong-willed man of many creative talents and enemies.. In addition to being a remarkable duelist, he is a gifted poet and playwright. Though, because of his noticeably large nose, he feels this prevents him from expressing his love for his distant cousin, the beautiful and intellectual Roxane, he believes that his ugliness would bar him from the "dream of being loved by even an ugly woman.". Of course, Roxane loves another, Christian de Neuvillette, an army cadet, who is too tongue-tied and guileless to romance her, though he too loves her... Cyrano helps the young Christian once he knows of Roxanne's feelings, famously assisting Christian by providing the most wonderful love letters to Roxane pretending to be sent by Christian, even during a siege battle, risking his life to deliver them. Of course, there is some delicious confusion regarding this courtship, and a sad plot twist
Overall, this is a wonderful romance with lots of action and comedy. This version is not a true verse play though there is an element of ‘stylized’ period speaking. It was first performed in July 2013 at The Grosvenor Open Air Theatre, Chester.
