Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov, translated by Mike Poulton

A group of family and friends reach a critical moment in their lives:  Vanya runs the family estate but finds no personal satisfaction in it;  Sonya, his niece and helper, is secretly in love with Dr Astrov;  Astrov wishes he could stop dealing with the sick and the dying, and grow trees instead; Maria, Vanya’s mother, is wrapped up with politics and “good causes”.   

 Relatives have come to stay - the Professor, Vanya’s brother-in-law, and his attractive younger wife, who arouses the desires of both Vanya and Astrov.  Then the Professor drops his bombshell: he proposes to sell the estate.  Passions are running high…
