Gruesome Playground Injuries by Rajiv Joseph Directed by Kelly Cowley29/09/22
Gruesome Playground Injuries is a one act play for two performers, telling the story of Kayleen and Doug, who meet in their school nurse’s office at age eight. She has a stomach ache, he’s just ridden his bike off the roof.
Over the next thirty years, we see glimpses of this troubled pair in A&E departments, mental health facilities, and funeral homes, as they arebrought together through injuries, heartbreaks and their own self-destructive tendencies.
Part black comedy and part unrequited romance, the Pulitzer nominated playwright Rajiv Joseph crafts an unconventional relationship saga about the intimacy between two people when they drop their defences and bear their wounds.
The timeline of this play is non-linear. Its action takes place over eight scenes, jumping back and forth from when the characters are kids, to when they are adults. The same two actors will play the roles of Kayleen and Doug at all ages. We will be seeking versatile performers capable of differentiating between when they are playing their characters as children, teens or grownups. We will also be looking for an energetic stage crew and an inventive light and sound operative to create engaging scene transitions, establishing a variety of time periods (1992-2022) in which our two characters come together.
