Last of the Red Hot Lovers by Neil Simon, directed by Margaret Bennett
27/02/25It’s New York in the early 1970s. Barney Cashman, a middle-aged, married, over-worked restaurateur, wants to join the sexual revolution before it's too late and arranges three different seductions.
The first is with Elaine Navazio, who proves to be a sex-pot who likes cigarettes, whisky and other women’s husbands. Bobbi Michele is next, a youngish actress who's too kooky by half. Finally, there’s Jeanette Fisher, a gloomy, depressed housewife who happens to be married to Barney's best friend and is a staunch moralist.
Now, Barney must decide which lady suits him best: does he really want an ‘affair’ or just to try sex with someone other than his wife – come and see and find out!
This is one of Neil Simon’s New York comedies. It borders on farce and pathos and should be fun to watch.
As this play was written in 1969 it reflects the attitudes and language of that period.
